Neutral canthal tilt

A neutral canthal tilt means your eye corners sit close to level. It is the most common reading, and the one the internet has the least to say about — which makes it worth explaining properly.

What it means

The line from your inner eye corner to your outer eye corner is close to horizontal. Not tilted up enough to read as upturned, not down enough to read as downturned.

On this site that is reported as 0 to 2 degrees. 2 and above is positive, below 0 is negative. Those numbers are reporting conventions we chose so the result is stable and repeatable — they are not medical thresholds, and other sources place them elsewhere.

Why it is the most common answer

Published measurements on adults cluster a few degrees positive, with a wide spread on either side. A clinical Korean series reported a mean above 8 degrees; Western sources commonly quote around 4 to 5. Methods disagree — direct measurement, photographs and CT do not produce the same figure on the same face.

What all of them agree on is the shape of the distribution: most people are near level, and strongly tilted eyes in either direction are the exception. If you measured neutral, you measured the same thing most people measure.

The band edges are not real

This is the part worth taking away.

If your reading came out at 1.2 degrees, you are not "almost negative". If it came out at 5.8, you are not "almost positive". Those are the same eye as 0.8 and 6.2 — the boundary is a line we drew to have something to report, and moving your chin a centimetre would push you across it.

Head pitch alone is worth several degrees, which is wider than the entire neutral band. So a reading near an edge means about level, and nothing more precise than that is available from a photograph.

The same eye, measured different ways

What neutral gives you in practice

The genuinely useful consequence: a level eye line goes either way with styling.

Want it to read upturned

Liner extended up and out from the outer corner, lash weight in the outer third, brow tail level or slightly lifted. On a neutral eye these read as intentional rather than corrective, because there is no large angle to fight.

Want it softer

Liner kept level or smudged slightly downward at the outer corner, even lash distribution, a straighter brow. Neutral eyes take this without looking tired, which strongly upturned eyes often do not.

Want it left alone

Also a complete answer. A level eye line is the one the camera treats most predictably, which is why neutral faces photograph consistently across angles.

A note on the category itself

Canthal tilt became an internet obsession because it is a single visible number, and single numbers invite ranking. A neutral result gets the least attention online precisely because there is nothing to argue about — no label to claim, no deficit to fix.

That absence is not a problem with your face. It is a sign that the category was never as meaningful as the vocabulary around it implies.

The other two readings

Wondering what can actually be changed? What moves a canthal tilt and what does not goes through brows, liner, camera angle and what surgery involves.

Wondering how the bands relate to each other? Negative vs positive canthal tilt compares all three side by side.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is a neutral canthal tilt?

Your inner and outer eye corners sit at close to the same height, so the line between them is near horizontal. On this site anything from 0 to 2 degrees is reported as level, 2 and above as positive and below 0 as negative.

Is a neutral canthal tilt good?

It is the most common result, which is the most useful thing to know about it. Published measurements on adults cluster a few degrees positive with a wide spread, so most faces land at or near level. Neutral is not a lack of something — it is where most people are.

Is neutral better than negative or positive?

No direction is better in every context. Upturned eyes read as more alert or intense, downturned as gentler and more approachable, neutral as balanced and adaptable. Which of those you want is a styling question, and the same face can lean any of the three ways with different makeup, brows and camera angle.

My reading was 1.2 degrees. Is that basically negative?

It is basically nothing. The band edges are reporting conventions, not real boundaries — 0.8 and 1.2 degrees are the same eye. A few degrees of head pitch moves the number more than the entire width of the neutral band, so treat anything near an edge as "about level" and stop there.

How do I measure my canthal tilt?

Run the free canthal tilt test on this site. It finds both eye corners from a 478-point face model, measures each eye against the horizontal and averages them. Use a front-facing photo with the camera level with your eyes and your chin neutral. The measurement happens in your browser and the photo is never uploaded.

Why is my left eye different from my right?

Because faces are not symmetrical, and a degree or two between eyes is completely ordinary. That is exactly why the reported figure is an average of the two rather than whichever eye you happened to look at.

Front-facing, unobstructed, evenly lit photos work best. Your photo is analysed on your phone or computer and is never uploaded.
